Each unit is inspected before dispatch, with particular attention to the finish and the joins. Natural materials vary a little from piece to piece; that variation is part of the product rather than a fault in it. Wipe with a dry cloth and always isolate the fitting at the socket before fitting or removing a bulb. For safety, fix the canopy to a sound structural ceiling point, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before work, and have any hard-wired connection made by a qualified electrician.
